50 is the new 30
I have a new pet peeve. It’s all the social media posts telling peri/post menopausal women that it’s not realistic to be as fit as they were at 30.
Says who?!
There is literally zero science that backs up this statement and plenty of science that says the exact opposite is true.
In fact, metabolism doesn’t slow down until after you’re 60 (and only at a rate of 1% per year after that) and you can still build muscle up until your 70’s!
And if you’re peri-menopausal/menopausal, the data suggests that you don’t necessarily gain body fat, but your body fat gets redistributed differently. So some expectation adjustment might be necessary if you are just looking at the appearance of your body. But it’s not necessarily more fat, it’s just differently placed fat.
While you may not desire or choose to spend your free time lifting weights and eating healthier, the option is certainly available.
Personally, I was a little freaked out over aging. I’ve watched both my grandmothers and my father get literally trapped in helpless bodies. I did not want the same for myself.
And when I heard a podcast by Peter Attia and he said something along the lines of: if you want to be a vibrant 70-year-old, you can’t be an average 50-year-old, I knew right then I wasn’t going to be an average 50-year-old.
And I’m not. And you don’t have to be either.
All of this to say, if you want to be a bad-ass, strongAF empty-nester, you can be! Don’t let the limiting beliefs of others hold you back.
Decide what you want for yourself and then make that happen. Start today!
