I deserve this....
“I deserve it.”
Have you ever said these words in relation to food or drink? I know I have...and those 3 little words are like poison to your weight loss goals and having normal eating habits.
To say you deserve food means you are saying you are worthy or suitable. That you deserve a reward. There is nothing farther from the truth! We never deserve food, we just want food. If I’m ruffling your feathers - good - but stay with me here!
As humans we don’t deserve to eat, we need to eat.
We must eat to survive. Food is not a reward, it’s a necessity.
Now, you may choose to eat...and that’s totally ok! Food is a source of pleasure and making a conscious decision (instead of being in reactionary mode from a stressful day) is completely within your right.
But choosing to eat a bag of chips and deserving to eat a bag of chips are 2 different things. Your brain interprets those thoughts differently. The former has you empowered and taking ownership, the latter does not.
I encourage you to erase that sentence - or any equivalent of it - from your vocabulary! Instead, replace it with the truth: I am choosing to eat nachos because I had a stressful day at work.
Do that every time you decide to “reward” yourself with food or drinks and see if that doesn’t sit in your brain a little differently.
And bonus points here - do yourself a favor and take 3 minutes and jot down what you really deserve in life.
Feeling good in your body?
Freedom from food obsession?
Never feeling guilt or shame from your food choices?
Waking up every Monday without feeling remorseful about the weekend?
That, my friends, is what you want to be spending your energy on!
